New England Mutual Life Building (third) is built.

1942

Architect: Cram & Ferguson. Originally New England Mutual Life Insurance, it is designed in the Art Deco style and located at 501 Boylston Street. The somewhat drab design of the building prompts poet David McCord to later write, “Ralph Adams Cram / One morning said damn, / And designed the Urn Burial / For a concern actuarial.” The historical murals in the lobby are painted by Charles Hoffbauer. The company is acquired by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1996 and the building is sold and renamed The Newbry in 2002.
